What We Learned This Week in Cultural Art...

This week in Cultural Art Class in order to celebrate the beginning of Black History Month we discussed important African Americans throughout history. After learning about important characters in historical and contemporary culture, the students chose someone they particularly liked or admired and painted a portrait of this person.

Popular with the first graders were Michelle Obama, George Washington Carver, and Martin Luther King Jr.!

The third graders did a GREAT job on their portraits!

We also read excerpts from Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech and the kids constructed mobiles out of their own dreams for their community, the country, and the world.

Meet The Team!

Miss Anai- I teach a math activity called "Math Superstars" (1st -5th Grade). This activity is designed to help students understand mathematical concepts through hands-on activities. I integrate art, music, and sports to illustrate such concepts. This year the kids will be exploring different Common Core standards according to their grade level.

Miss Britta- I'm the cultural arts teacher (1st -5th Grade). Each week the students make art projects to reflect the subjects they are learning about. Check out all the great work by these smart and talented kids!

Miss Elena- I teach the segment called Connecting The Dots (a reading activity) which focuses on reading/writing skills with the first and second graders. My goal is to help them develop their character and apply what they learn within the classroom in their daily lives.

Miss Kalysha- I teach the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) program. The 4th and 5th grade students have learned various lessons all integrating each S.T.E.A.M. objective. Students explore alternative energy, robotics and plants while learning different techniques like soldering, measurements and art design.

Miss Keri- I work with the students on Life Skills (1st -5th Grade), Chess Club, Sports, and Art! I work to engage the students in every activity that we do. It's exciting to see the students grow and mature throughout the year!

Miss Lisa- Super Readers! (a reading activity for 3rd grade)We go beyond the classroom textbooks. Through the use of comic books, the students expand their vocabulary, develop a strong writing process and use their talent and skills gained through Family Focus to create their own comic book! Not only do the students have fun, but I enjoy seeing their reading and writing skills develop at such a young age!

Mrs. Leon - Explorer Express (a reading activity for 4th - 5th Grade). Mrs. Leon a school day teacher with a Master's Degree in reading and we are very fortunate to have her in our staff.

Mr. Perez- Program Coordinator. My job is to promote educational and recreational activities using Common Core standards and reasearch based curriculums. As part of my job, I also create opportunities for the students' parents to get involve with their children through family events and parent workshops. What I enjoy the most about my job is to see the whole community (teachers, parents, community organizations, etc) working together for the wellbeing of the children.
